ABOUT THE IAU
The International Crossbow-shooting Union (German name ‘International Armbrustschützen Union’ IAU) was founded in 1956. Based in Switzerland, the IAU organizes bi-annual World, Continental and International championships in three target crossbow disciplines (Match and Field).
IAU Championships have now visited fifteen countries across four continents. IAU Championships regularly attract Elite competitors from the Olympic shooting disciplines (Air rifle and 50m small-bore). As a non-Olympic sport, the goal of the IAU is for crossbow shooting to become an official event at the World Games. For this to come about the IAU must first become a member of SportAccord – formerly known as the General Association of International Sports Federations GAISF. In the medium term, the purpose of the IAU’s programme of Development Missions is to build-up their membership level to the required number of member countries (40 on 3 continents) in order to be accepted as a member of the GAISF
THE WORLD GAMES
The World Games take place every 4 years following an Olympic Games. Held under the auspices of the International World Games Association (IWGA) the World Games are currently made up of 32 non-Olympic sports and disciplines – including field archery.
IAU DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
The IAU currently has 27 member countries in Europe and Asia. A Development Mission to Cameroon (in November 2010) resulted in the continent of Africa becoming part of the IAU crossbow-shooting family. India joined the IAU in 2010 and the newly formed Indian Crossbow Shooting Federation will also be hosting an IAU Development Mission in the near future.
