The Match Division is supervising outdoor and indoor competitions in the following disciplines:

  • Match Crossbow 10m (indoor)
  • Match Crossbow 30m (outdoor)

The Match Crossbow 10m was introduced into the IAU programme during 1977 and, since then, has attracted many new nations to the sport. Usually run in conjunction with a 30 meter event, the IAU’s 10 meter discipline is a technical event that is appreciated by top-flight air rifle athletes and match-crossbow specialists alike. Shooting takes place on indoor ranges that have been equipped with electrically driven target transport systems. Existing 10 meter airgun ranges can often be adapted, but in the absence of permanent facilities, a temporary shooting range can be set-up in a large sports hall using portable equipment. Competitors shoot in the standing position without any support.

It is a discipline using special weapons that, differently to field crossbows, are cocked by means of a lever and also may use electronic accessories like trigger, spirit level light or safety mechanisms to assist the shooting. The target, distance and allowed equipment is the same as for the ISSF Olympic discipline Air Rifle; what is different, is that a single bolt is used repeatedly for each shot. The target is affixed on a plate with a soft metal center, allowing the bolt sticking in the target for the time it is brought back to the firing line by means of a target carrier. The competition consists of 40 scoring shots (thus allowing for a possible maximum of 400 points) in a total time of 90 minutes. This time includes also time for sighting shots which shall be shot before the first scoring shot.

The 30m Match Crossbow is shot from a shielded firing line into an open range; therefore, wind indicator flags are an important part of the shooter's equipment. The competition consists of 2 positions - 30 shots standing and 30 shots kneeling. Shooting time for each posistion is 90 minutes. Standing position is without any support, in the kneeling position, the use of a shooting sling and kneeling roll is allowed. Medals are awarded in each position, but for the title and ranking, the total of both is taken.

There are also Finals and Mixed events with a separate ruling.
